Lab Testing Q&A

What is lab testing?

Lab testing is the process of obtaining and examining biological samples from your body. The most common types of samples are:

  • Blood
  • Urine
  • Nasal and throat fluids
  • Skin cells or other small tissue samples
  • Stool

Blood and urine tests are by far the most common lab tests because both can provide an extremely wide range of information about your health.

What can lab testing tell me?

Lab testing can find the signs of:

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Thyroid disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Liver problems
  • Infections
  • Flu and other viruses
  • Anemia
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Vitamin deficiencies
  • Allergies
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Blood clotting problems
  • Drug use

There are many specific and general health problems that lab tests can look for, so some tests are multipurpose. For example, a complete blood count (CBC) looks for cell count differences. It can help evaluate your whole health, detect the cause of new symptoms, monitor your chronic condition, or assess the effects of your current medication.

Where do you go for lab testing?

At Pulse Primary Care, you don’t have to go anywhere for lab testing. The practice built a state-of-the-art lab in each of its three offices to make testing more accessible and easy. You can have your lab testing right away, with no drive or long wait.

The lab evaluates your samples immediately, and you’ll get results during your appointment.

Do I have to fast for lab testing?

You need to fast (no food or water for at least four to eight hours, based on directions) for some lab testing. Generally speaking, the lab tests requiring fasting are scheduled well in advance, like your annual physicals.

What do my lab testing results mean?

Pulse Primary Care understands that all those lab values can look really confusing on paper, so they boil it down to the basics you need to know. If you have questions or don’t understand some aspect of your test results, they are happy to go over the lab values and talk solutions if you need to make some changes.
